Black Friday Surprises

Black Friday shopping attendance in 2010 enjoyed a robust participation, indicating a return to better economic times, many news sources reported. But smart Black Friday shoppers were looking more to get advantageous deals more deeply discounted than the already recessional product promotions currenlty available.

Retailers across the board touted Black Friday specials in email campaigns, television commercials, and print ads, reflecting a vibrant trickle-down effect to other vertical media channels. Savvy shoppers scanned prices, checking for better markdowns and discounts that electronics retailers were already releasing to the public.

Bundles of TV accessories or gaming electronics with newly enabled web and wi-fi televisions were early-shopper doorbusters at every retailer nationwide. With current promotions, Smart Santa elves should be cruising all the free gift cards and dependable retailer deals they can. Building points or loyalty cred by shopping now, and using the points or volume purchase totals for gifts in future can help save money. Surgical Black Friday deal shopping makes the purchase of a family big screen LCD TV pencil out better.

Ebay is still handing out coupons. Paypal has preferred vendors and occasional discounts and purchases bonuses. And retailers like Kohl’s and target are sending online searchers into a tizzy researching the deepest discounts and the latest deals. Many consumers are bookmarking their favorites and looking for package extras.

Mall parking was stretched to the limit by late Friday, after low temperatures kept the serious overcrowding at bay for Black Friday stores opening times. Early Christmas shoppers raided stores, some looking to capitalize on Black Friday advertised sales and some looking to get Christmas shopping done and out of the way when the best selection is available.

One California retailer features some amazing bargains on huge scale LCD TV deals. Fifty five inch Sony Bravia and forty six inch Sony Bravia 1080p edge LED for $1,998 and $1,498 could be the starting point. Then shopping at every other retailer and electronics vendor becomes a matching and price comparison exercise, versus a time-killing open ended nebula of confusion. If the consumer wants backlit LCD 3DHD TV then they can scan those ads only. Surgical scanning of the advertisements in the broadest parameters can then take place.

Dedicating a single email address for all these ads can be an appropriate way to consolidate ads for review. End of year retailers will be looking to make deals and cut their inventory before it ages out of the technology cutting edge. This the supply “glut” many experts contend still exist in LCD TV inventories nationwide.

Comparisons between Black Friday era deals can include bracket mounting, installation labor, home delivery, and warranty or exchange policy expansion leeway. Free sales tax, a free Blu-Ray player, a free electronic game console, stereo accessories, or a price break on a audio system component might meet your individual home theater needs.

This is a benefit of the big electronics stores retailers throwing huge sales and buying ad space in competitive flyer and insert sections. This type of national retailer will be featuring such deep discounts. The smaller stores and regional electronics and TV stores must meet these types of consumer expectations. they must also manage inventory pressures to move unit or forfeit floor space to new goods. The customers will spend elsewhere where legacy programs are in operation, and looking over ads can be a supportive aid for reviewing deals and prices.

And those consumers looking for the best possible deal on a new LCD TV can wait a little longer. Experts at CNNMoney.com say that prices will constrict further through the end of the year. “The average price for a 42-inch LCD TV is forecast to be $626 this quarter, but the price is expected to fall below $600 in the beginning of next year before rising again, according to NPD Group. Prices for 52-inch LCD TVs are expected to drop by $120 on average during the same time period.”

The best deal anywhere for Black Friday has got to be the $17.99 kids laptop at Macy’s of all places. it requires four AA batteries. This device is perfect for a young child or grandchild’s  Christmas gift. And check out the savings from the Print Ad Savings Pass! The perfect Black Friday consumer is the one who has a TV at home that is outdated, has visual artifacts, or does not interact ideally with local cable or wireless systems. For example, if all your neighbors have great wi-fi and you don’t, their internet plan or performance might outperform yours. But their devices might be enabled for technical advantages your main home TV does not have.

Who should be shopping for an LCD TV on Black Friday? least one year old, too small for their vision, and is not wireless Internet capable, has no HDMI or personal computer connections, and has limited remote options for operation. The home consumer may want a thin screen television to better create room in the home theater space. Thinner LCD or LED screens have a smaller footprint and can entertain the kitchen cook or garage hobbyist affordably.

But there are other reasons to shuffle the home TV units around the floor plan. The main room for family TV watching may change in winter months to a cozier space for easier heating. Or if the college student in the family is headed off to school, they might want a small high quality LCD monitor for Internet-enabled voice over internet (VOIP) calls. This kind of device shuffling makes new prices for detailed option high performance LCD TV models tasty deals.

But drops in LCD prices may spell relief for those replacing an ailing TV unit or those intent on getting the best savings on early gaming or netbook gift purchases. And the best prices might be found for accessories like bracket mounts and TV stands, variable brand cables and game and movie titles. These are generally supplemented to accessorize the big TV sale prices in electronic store circulars.

Some experts claim there is currently an LCD “recession” on, with a quality high diagonal span TV screen already placed in just over 50% of homes. This is always going to be more true in some residential areas than others. Legacy “tube” televisions should be phased out to receive and translate and display the higher quality signal being broadcast from every satellite and cable company around.

Retailers match prices to existing geographic areas around their store. And depressed economic areas may have more motivationally priced TV deals than other more price insensitive areas. And accessories for LCD 3DTV television models may make up in price the dramatic price drops mentioned in electronics store sale ads. New HDMI cables and a hike in basic cable may expand the budget somewhat for new media TV access levels.

The best LCD TV customer cruising around for deals on Black Friday is one who finds a deep promotional discount on an LCD TV model they like the brand of. But ideally consumers should have the option to bring it back if something doesn’t work out. The return or exchange policy for many specially marketed or purchased bulk brand units specifically for the Black Friday sale may not be returnable without a 25% restocking fee.

Go CVS for a Netbook Deal!

I have said it before and I’ll say it again, some of the best LCD TV deals happen when you aren’t looking! CVS has holiday and home gift ideas  that loyal CVS customers could save even more on! If this sounds like an advertisement, please know that I was actually impressed with the quality of the electronics and reviewed them in-store, and that this recommendation is made for no consideration.

Instead, I am excited about a Sylvania netbook at CVS with a seven inch TFT screen. This is the right fit between a tablet and a mobile phone. But the CVS netbook is going out the door for $90-odd bucks. But at CVS, you always get these Bonus Buck Extra Buck receipts for dollars off your next purchase. And with giftcard incentive offers and extra percentage off promotions, the price will go even lower. The processor is an Intel compatible ARM.

CVS is currently featuring an extra 20% off everything for the next two days. If a customer were to transfer a prescription and gain the $25 giftcard, then feasibly a $94 netbook could be reduced to $70, and then with 20% off that, the final taxable price would be about $10 less. That’s $60 for a gift unit or around-the house extra blogging machine. This unit is ONLY 2 pounds, making it the lightest mainline netbook around.
I looked at the box specs for this model. This Sylvania netbook at CVS is Internet capable, but the memory is only 128K with internal storage of 4 gigabytes.  That is lower than most software and operating systems and browsers can work with.  But the settings can be enabled to deliver email without flash video and other add-ons which require additional memory. The shipping weight is 4 pounds, and I advise picking it up in person. CVS lists it online at $99, but I’m sure I saw it in-store for $94 or $97.

This makes a a great “dumb terminal”, what many people use older computers for now. The TFT display is not what most people are used to in a new computer. But 3 USB ports isn’t all bad. That’s connectivity to a printer, a network line to another computer, or video outlet. Windows CE may run some interactive fax apps as well. But I would urge this as a perfect replacement for those awful dinosaur computers many people still have.

But for a standalone PC with wi-fi networking capability for file transfer, this makes an outstanding model for kitchen or living room, an extra keyboard with emergency Internet capability. The Windows CE Professional version is the operating system. The product notation for this Sylvania netbook is Customer/Technical support via email at dgsupport@digitalgadgets.com or available by calling 1-888-571-0866.

The CVS staff I spoke with said they had been returned a lot, and I can see why. People probably didn’t check out the specs on the back of the box or didn’t know enough to recognize which apps wouldn’t run on this small scale device. But if you’re out and about, why risk your “big money” device on virtual networks with viruses and other stuff? Why wear down your costly laptop with coffee shop outings?

My ideal use for a device like this would be as an alternate keyboard option for TV tray usage or spare internet portal if my main one failed.  The Sylvania netbook deal makes it a perfect always-on standby device for ongoing projects or planning. I would put this model at the very top of my list for after Christmas shopping or closeout checking back. For extra gadget productivity, i.e., “everybody needs the computer at once”, this model will get some family use mileage.

This netbook is hardly capable of playing the massive multiplayer game software most kids want, nor is it capable of loading hourlong streaming video at all or loading continuous threaded Windows 9.0 apps. I am not sure it could load Itunes. But I wouldn’t recommend using it for those.  I would recommend this Sylvania netbook as a practical home or work desktop replacement with a small portable footprint.

Believe it or not, many people are still capable of producing work like writing, text and files without internet access and content enabling. Data entry, address book additions, or basic thoughts and journal writing can happen with a netbook like this. Writing the novel will happen a lot faster without the distractions of the Internet. And maybe for the guest room a survival email device would be nice for hospitality.

For a family with multiple kids in school, using this netbook as a portable report writing accessory at the library could be a real help. Brainstorming and minutes taking are perfect for this. This model isn’t valuable enough to get stolen, but provide value when needed. For a senior citizen who wants to write their life story or have a blogging help in the comfy den instead of the “setup” at another part of the house, files can be saved using smart card technology and transferred.

Sylvania is a long time brand known to many. For those consumers who feel they can pass on this deal, remember that the day when you next have a computer virus wipe out your Internet access, you have to finish the report by the next day, five people need to use the computer for three hours, or the programming on your main computer gets screwed up enough to take for repair.

Dropping $79 on a spare computer will look like a walk in the park on that day.
